The Rutherford, or Rutherfurd, family didn’t
Get to these shores as early as some other
Migrants, but being Scottish, they were probably
Waiting to see if the thing was gong to go or not.

Nevertheless, taking their sporrans, Robert and
Thomas Rutherford settled in Virginia in 1743
And even more dubious John Rutherford didn’t
Make it to New Jersey until 1791.

A most ancient Scottich clan, the Rutherfords
Of that ilk and Teviotdale, dating back lineally
To 1140, at which time Robertus-Dominus de
Rutherford signed a charter for King David I.

Even before that, the traditional origin is that
One of the family conducted, or carried,
Ancient Scottish King Ruther across a ford
In the Tweed river, and was given the lands
Which took that name and for which the family
Took their name.
